GPS Reliability |

Are other people finding the Mychron GPS reliable in lap timing? Ours so far has not been a stellar performer in that are though it creates track maps, both
GPS and normal along with all other data that the GPS should supply. We have cleared the GPS each time and it has worked normally once only in creating
separate lap times and not a cumulative time for the whole race.

Let us know how it goes with resolving issue as we are thininking of getting the AIM GPS or the CDS GPS add-in our AIM Pista. For us the CDS has a slight
advantage as we can mount the Start Button remotly as we can't easiliy reach the buttons on the AIM display (Altough it only needs to be done once per
track).

I think the GPS is a great device, don't get me wrong there. We are using it on a Pista and have now decided to put it in another vehicle to test it, what
that will change I don't know but it is worth a try. I believe there is a problem, it is not universal and may be harder to fix because of that. I am
really looking for others who through experience with the problem have found a fix. It records the whole race as one lap and does not see the GPS beacon at
all. Having said that it has worked well for one race meeting and recorded as it should.

We have one customer reporting a similar problem with an MXL Pista. We haven't gotten to the bottom of what's wrong with his setup.

I spoke to an engineer who designs GPS systems today who has promised me he can build a GPS system that we can import the data from for less than a quarter of the cost and it will sample at 100hz which is at least 10 times faster than the one we are attempting to use. Guess what we are going to use? |

We tried the GPS with a Pista and found similar problems. Random lap times, no lap counts and generaly useless information. Plus it is a real PIA to convince
the track to let us stop on the track to seed the GPS. We were not able to get any help with the problem so we took it out and it joined other bad decisions
in our junk box. The optical beacon works fine.

We had a GPS engineer look at it and he was not very complimentary on the system at all. It is basically a cheap system that leaves a lot to be desired.

When I have used the AIM GPS, I have not stopped on the track, but just motored down the pit lane, and pressed the dash button when alongside the start/finish
line. The "virtual beacon" is 100' wide which handles most track/pit lane widths.
Another way to set the beacon is using the GPS manager software. This allows you to either enter GPS coordinates, or pick information up from your GPS data recorded on the track. |

A bit further to this issue. We by accident found that the antenna had issues. The antenna could be held and by moving the lead where it entered the antenna
the reading on the dash would change ar drop out altogether. We had another antenna made, total cost about $20 and it now reads lap times, that part is now
working well. What it still does not do is read all the sectors. We set five sectors and it read the whole five just once and for the rest of the day read the
first two and that was all. it is now obvious we have a software issue. It is not random in its behaviour. it always reads the first two and that is all. If we
overlay the exported KML file on Google Earth it is not positioned correctly so there are issues there as well. I wonder if it does not like working in the
southern hemisphere? There are reports of this happening with other GPS devices. AIM are now on the case so we shall see what the outcome is.
