it was sad to hear about tom thrash. didn't know him, but sounds like he was a racer. there was a few other big incidents from what i gather. a couple
of formula car incidents, at least one heli flight out that needs back surgery. sounds like the s2 race was exciting and eventful. but what about the
apres-racing activities? no reports from seibkins? inquiring minds want to know

Well, I had a great start and was up to fifth coming out of Turn 3 and had a good run going toward Turn 5. I had more momentum than David so I was pulling
along side of him and was thinking I could box him out in 5. I knew the accordion effect was coming so I started to brake and then it seemed I needed to brake
more quickly and the car snap-spun counter-clockwise. My first thought as I felt like I was going backwards toward turn 5 was I was going to hit a lot of cars
and cause a lot of damage. As I was slowing down and so far hadn't hit anything I thought to keep the engine running so I moved my left foot off the brake
to get it over to the clutch and put my right foot on the brake. This caused the car to not decel as quickly and I was now spinning clockwise and starting to
straight up. As the car was not deceling as quickly I realized that I might hit the wall on driver right so I mashed the brake as hard as possible. I think I
actually had visions of keeping it running and rejoining but of cause that didn't happen. I looked to my left to see the cars coming and tried to start
the engine. It didn't want to start as all the cars drove by. I had a moment to think and I looked over and saw my ignition was turned off. I turned the
ignition on and it started right up and I took off in last. I have never experienced something like this and boy did it happen quickly.
I have it all on in car video and I'll try to post it when I have some time so everybody can see what not to do on the start. You'll see in the video that the first time I tried to start the engine my finger actually turns off the ignition. Tony |

I knew Tom pretty well and raced against him back in my production car days. He was a "natural" driver and could beat you even when his car was
falling apart; no surprise that he was on pole for the race, he was just plain FAST. He also seemed to be in a constant good mood and would help anyone who
needed it, especially other Mazda racers. I always joked that my only claim to fame in racing was that I was the last person to beat Tom for the E/P divisional
title (1999).

I was able to get around a bit and meet some but not all S2 folks in person.
Nice meeting everyone. Hope to have a bigger gun next race. (and better driver!) Corky! |

Congratulation Corey on a superb drive.
What a great race!! We had no idea who was going to be in first place when they came back around each time. Those laps take forever when you're standing on pit wall! Corey started on pole, dropped back to 5th and worked his way back up to first. He has some great in car video! He had a great pass on Bart for the lead, coming out of 12 on the inside, up Thunder Valley side by side, through turn 13 on the out side, finally getting the pass done heading to 14. Great side by side racing! Corey and Bart never touched once, giving each other just enough room. The June Sprints does it up right, Podium interviews and spraying of the champagne! (I'll get you back for that Bart!  )
All in all, I can see why so many people come out for this race, its ever bit as exciting as the Run-Offs!

Randy,
Corey did the exact same pass on me at T12-13-14. It was one cool move -- I went into 13 pretty hard, but leaving just enough room on the outside as he had started to pull up to my side. We were about 3 inches apart the whole way, using the extra pavement at the exit of T13... Great weather, and a fun race. The trip home seemed a bit long, we just arrived this morning. |

I"m glad you had a save trip home David. It was one cool move! I watched it on tape. If I can change 8mm tape to dvd I will post it.

Hey Randy
Had a nice chat with John & Corey at Mid- Ohio Saturday in Jim Kelley's Paddock. Seems everyone gets there sooner or later over the day !! My Wife Tesa just shoots the 8mm onto the screen and tapes it with a digital camera on a tripod then trasfers it to dvd.She has done lots of old home movies for people that way.
